Hunger Games Camp

Background
For the past five years I've directed a week-long Hunger Games Camp at my middle school through our SummerTimes program.  As an early fan of the series who saw the fandom spread throughout my middle school and beyond, I thought it would be really cool if there was a way for fans to come together and experience the Hunger Games (minus all the killing).

After the success of my first week of camp in the summer of 2011, I offered and sold out three sessions of camp in summers 2012, 2013, and 2014. For my personal sanity, I cut back to just one week in the summer of 2015. When it began, my camp was the only of its kind.  Since then, Hunger Games camps have sprung up all over the place. I've spent (and continue to spend) countless hours reading and re-reading the series to develop a schedule of activities that captures the essence of The Hunger Games, trolling the internet for ideas to adapt, and putting it all together to create something really special.  And I'm pretty darn proud of it.

If you live in the Alexandria, VA area and are interested in becoming a tribute at my camp (or are a parent of a potential tribute), stay tuned for the details on summer 2016.

Hunger Games Camp Schedule and Activities
I realize that not every interested teen has the ability to come to my camp (pesky things like geography and limited availability of slots get in the way) and that other librarians, teachers and parents might not have the time or ability to put together something like this from scratch.  I also really appreciate the folks at Scholastic Publishing who have provided amazing "sponsor gifts" for the tributes.  Plus, I just really love this camp.  All of that is why, in 2012, I put all planning materials for the camp on my blog for FREE!

Please use these materials to create your own Hunger Games program, party or camp.  When you do, be nice and give me some credit! Send folks to my blog, recommend my activities (if you like them) and/or drop a comment to let me know.  Any suggestions or feedback you can give are also appreciated.

  4. Haha! Yes, it did take ages. Luckily though, it doesn't have to take you ages too! Keep me posted as to what the kids think and any ideas to enhance or improve.

  6. I'm so glad I found your blog. Our district does summer camps also but lately the numbers have been dwindling so I asked my students to help me come up with a fun camp session. They recommended me doing a Hunger Games training camp. So here I am scouring the internet, reading the books, watching the movies and trying to get as familiar with HG as possible. Your resources will get me through my first week, but anything else you can link or send me would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

    1. I have Scholastic's blessing to do the camps! When I was first creating the camp, I reached out to them to see if it would be okay. They loved the idea so much that they sent me Hunger Games stickers, bookmarks, and a bunch of other giveaways to share with my campers.
