Nonfiction Monday: Youth Media Awards Winners!

Nonfiction Monday is a weekly meme in the Kidlitosphere that invites bloggers to read and review a nonfiction book on Monday as a way to promote high-quality nonfiction titles.  Each week, a different blogger "hosts" Nonfiction Monday and provides a roundup of all the posts.  This week Nonfiction Monday is hosted by laurasalas: writing the world for kids.

Just minutes ago, the winners of the Youth Media Awards were announced to an auditorium of children's and young adult librarians at the ALA Mid-Winter Conference in Seattle, WA.  Awards were given for fiction and nonfiction titles (I'll post later with my thoughts on the fiction honors and winners), but right now I want to focus on the facts!

Today is a BIG day for children's and young adult literature.  This is especially true for Bomb: The Race to Build--and Steal--the World's Most Dangerous Weapon, which won not only the YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults Award, but also the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal AND was a John Newbery Honor Book!

Here's how it broke down for the nonfiction awards:

YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults (which I've seen at least once referred to as the "ENYA")

Winner:

Honors:

Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal

Winner:

Honors:

And there you have it, folks!  Our nonfiction Youth Media Awards winners!  A shout out also to Moonbird and Titanic, which received honors for ENYA and Sibert.  2012 was a good year for nonfiction.

Stay tuned for my recap on the fiction titles!

  1. I am shamefaced not to have read most of these. I prefer I read most of my nonfiction in the picture book or adult range--not so much in between. But I'm going to go add several of these to my tbr list--thanks for the recap!
